When You’re Weary in Well Doing.......

In the world we live in today, being single can be terrifyingly satisfying. You have the freedom to come and go from your house as you please. If you decide that fast food and/or brownies and ice cream is what you’re having for dinner, you get in your car and go get it. Whose going to stop you? And when you go to sleep at night, that entire bed belongs to you friend!

However, with this satisfying freedom of your own house, car, and bed comes the never ending bills, the maintenance costs, and the responsibility attached to it. Terrifying isn’t it? It all becomes stressful which undoubtedly makes you weary working so hard in the long run.

In an effort to de-stress and still be considered good citizens, I imagine some singles turn to relationships, drugs, or who knows what to temporarily relieve them of the weariness that’s bound to come with life as a single.

They have the freedom to do whatever but as Paul said in 1 Corinthians 10:23, “I have the right to do anything," you say--but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"--but not everything is constructive.”

Now add the blessing of being a Christian single. We strive to not just be good citizens, but Kingdom citizens. Living for the Lord by taking care of our daily responsibilities and abstaining from anything that’s displeasing to Him. Well that takes a lot off the table.......and can I be honest? As a Christian single myself, it gets lonely, and it can be unbearably weary.

We all know or have heard 2 Thessalonians 3:13, “Don’t grow weary of doing good.” We know we shouldn’t, but how? How do you maintain all the responsibilities of life while pressing toward that high calling of Christ Jesus WITHOUT succumbing to the often alluring trap of temptation? What can we do to keep up the good fight, and ultimately please God and resist anything that could get us off course? Let me share a few tips I’ve learned:

  1. First and foremost, talk to God directly! What I love most about Jesus is His humanity, His ability to relate. For so long I felt God was unreachable when in reality, He was closer than anybody and anything. No long and elaborate prayer is needed. Just a “Jesus, I need you!” prayer goes a long way. He reaches down to comfort us in our weariness and encourages us to keep going.

  1. The Word is a great source of encouragement. It’s amazing that a Book that’s been around for so long has ideals and principles that appeal to your exact situation. Galatians 6:9 gives us hope not to be weary because “...at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” All this work, physically and spiritually is for our good and has great benefits! We reap great things from working hard and staying faithful to God and His ways. This is just one of the many scriptures to help you stay on track. Read them! Write them down! Recite them! Whatever helps you remember best, these words are your guide to get through life.

  1. Don’t sit there and sulk! Go out and have fun with like minded people. If you go looking, there’s someone at church or at work who you can have fun with, or just sit, talk, and relate to about your struggles. There’s nothing like doing life with people who are striving for the same Kingdom values as you. God knows exactly what you need and exactly how to get it to you. Trust Him to send the right people to bring words to build you up to keep you going in life.

  1. Not able to find anyone in person? Social media can be a great tool to reach out and find like minded people. Being an introvert, finding Facebook groups that encouraging members or finding videos of sermons and memorable quotes are extremely helpful. The beautiful thing about the Internet is you can watch or read as many times as you want or need to.

At the end of the day you have to do what’s best for you....and you know what? Everyday when you’re out in this world handling your business and encouraging yourself to do things God’s way, it’s much harder to become weary. These tips and a little encouragement goes a long way. So in case no one has told you let me be the first to say you’re doing better than you think! Don’t be weary, you’re reward is coming.....you’ve got this! Not only do you have this, but God has you too!
